Last academic year, the California State Legislature flooded community colleges with $100 million in “student equity” money. These funds are designed to pay for new programs that will “decrease the achievement gap in under-represented student groups.” Many JACC member colleges are designing plans right now to spend their portions of state equity funds—a compelling story for many of our newspapers.
Nayra Pacheco of Just Communities works with high schools and colleges throughout the state to help them understand exactly why some student groups don’t succeed in college and what instructors can do—every day and in every class—to change that situation.
